Normal Skin Structure:
Skin, the most visible organ of the body, the outer covering of our body, plays an integral role in maintaining our health and well being. By volume, skin is the largest organ of our body, weighting about 8 pounds and covering a surface of about 1.8 square meters or 20 square feet in an average adult.
Made of a very complex structure, skin provides protection to our body from the outside world. It prevents bacteria and other disease-causing elements to penetrate our body. It is the main source of metabolism of Vitamin D, and it is also our connection with the outside world, not only through our sense of touch, but also by way of radiating who we are and what we look like. Skin identifies each one of us as a unique individual, with our unique skin color, skin texture, hair color, etc.
Anatomically, skin is made of three layers,
Epidermis or the top layer of skin,
Dermis, the middle layer and
Subcutis or Hypordermis , the deepest layer. Deep injuries to skin that result in scar formation go through dermis and Subcutis. Most superficial scratches only damage the epidermis, which can heal fully.
